New media jobs redraft

A major shake-up has been proposed for all online staff.

Corporate management want to rationalise a staffing structure that they say grew in an "anarchic" way with the rapid expansion of online activity.

Among the 600-plus staff involved in editorial and technical roles in online departments throughout the Corporation there are 178 job titles, and management want a simplified structure of roughly 12 new BBC-wide generic new media job titles.

The reorganisation has begun with talks about new job descriptions for editorial and content production staff in all online areas, and not just New Media Division. New descriptions for technical, applications, and design staff are due to follow.

No journalistic jobs will change, since they are covered by the nationally-agreed roles of journalists and broadcast assistants, and no one will lose money in the shake-up.
